Uruguay's national team started a new process with Diego Forlán as the head coach. A few weeks before his first call-up, one of the heavyweights who retired from the Celeste and could be called up again is Luis Suárez, who had retired from international football in 2024.
What happened to Suárez?
Suárez has not played for the national team since the goalless draw against Paraguay on September 6, 2024, at the Centenario stadium. Days before that match, the former Barcelona and Liverpool striker had announced his retirement from the national team.
Why is it important for Uruguay?
The possible call-up of Suárez comes ahead of the FIFA date in late September and early October, when Uruguay will face South Korea and Japan in two friendlies. Suárez has 69 goals, 39 assists, and 143 games with the national team, records that keep him as the top scorer in Uruguay's history.
What does Forlán say?
“I have a huge affection for Luis, we have a lot of trust. If he is selectable, being Uruguayan, he is an option. He has experience, he has goals, as he continues to demonstrate every weekend... why not? That will be seen later. No one will discuss what Luis is”, said the new coach at his presentation press conference.
Uruguay is currently third in the 2026 World Cup with 2 points, and their next match will be against Japan on September 24, 2026. The Uruguayan team is looking to improve their performance and advance in the tournament
