Independiente Signs Santiago Mele on Loan to Strengthen Goalkeeper Position
Argentine club Independiente has announced the inclusion of Uruguayan goalkeeper Santiago Mele. The portero, who featured with his national squad for the 2026 World Cup but didn't play, arrives from Monterrey, Mexico, and will remain on loan for one year with an option to buy included.
“Being valued by a big club and a coach of Gustavo Quinteros’s track record is something that I highly appreciate,” Mele stated about joining the Argentine team. The 28-year-old goalkeeper had previous experience in local football playing for Unión before moving internationally, first to Junior in Colombia, and then to Monterrey where he was part of their first-choice team.
According to EFE, the option to buy on Mele's contract extends until three million dollars. Independiente seeks to bolster its defense with an experienced goalkeeper who has gained experience both at home and abroad.
Mele joins a squad that began strongly in the Argentine league by defeating Estudiantes de La Plata 0-2. The addition of Mele puts him up against the incumbent goalkeeping player Rodrigo Rey, whose contract expires this year, as well as potentially other new signings.
Santiago Mele's Background
Mele made his Uruguayan national team debut in March 2023 and was later called up for both the 2024 Copa América and the 2026 World Cup. Despite these call-ups, he did not feature in any of the games.
Mele's Arrival at Independiente
With previous experience playing for Unión between 2022 and 2023 from a loan spell with his hometown club Plaza Colonia, the move to Argentina is aimed at gaining more playing time and confirming his level of play.
Direct Competition Within
Mele’s arrival presents direct competition with Rodrigo Rey, the long-time goalkeeper who has been with Independiente for three years. With Rey's contract expiring this year, there is an ongoing challenge for a spot in the team.
