At this moment, the team is 5 points behind the leaders Spain. In their last game, Uruguay lost 0-1 to Spain on June 27, 2026. In the last 5 games, the team has had 0 wins, 4 draws and 1 loss, with a recent form of LDDDD. Diego Poyet, former Uruguay national team player, retired from football at 24 and became a bodybuilder. After signing with Godoy Cruz in 2017, Poyet could not play due to foreign player quota issues and spent months without training. It was during that period that he started going to the gym to pass the time. "Those were the worst eight or ten months of my life. I started to feel bad about everything, not just training. Also at home. Saying I was depressed is a very strong word, I think I didn't reach that extreme", Poyet recounted. It was during that difficult period in Mendoza that the spark that ignited that stage became an obsession during his subsequent passage through the Pafos FC of Cyprus. "I went every afternoon and was alone. Always tried to improve in some way to gain an advantage in football and didn't realize that the gym was more enjoyable, more and more, and it was time to make a decision", he explained. He studied nutrition, changed his diet and left football definitively. "He decided to retire at 24 or 25 years old, which was a shock. He came to my house to tell me he no longer wanted to play football", his father Gustavo Poyet recalled. And he described with precision the mentality that his son transferred from football to bodybuilding: "He dedicates himself 100% to everything he does. One day we went to dinner and people were drinking beer; impossible. He doesn't try alcohol. Never. We finished dinner, put desserts in the center; he doesn't touch them. His behavior is 100%, not 99%", Gustavo said. Poyet's physical transformation is visible and radical. He abandoned the midfielder's physique to adopt that of a bodybuilder, the result of three pillars that he himself describes: eliminating intense cardio, adopting a hypercaloric diet and dedicating himself to strength training. On his Instagram, he shares videos of lifting heavy weights and extreme strength routines. Today, he also integrates his father's technical staff as an assistant. Always linked to sports and high performance, but from the other side of the pitch.
