Diego Forlán Takes Over as Uruguay National Team Coach
The former Uruguayan striker Diego Forlán was appointed as the new interim coach of the national team and the U-20 squad, replacing Marcelo Bielsa, who concluded his tenure with the team. This appointment comes after Uruguay's recent participation in the 2026 World Cup.
Forlán, known for his passion for football and his experience as a player, will guide and consolidate the generational transition within the South American team. The AUF decided to also give him the charge of the U-20 squad with the aim of creating a continuous project between the youth base and the main team.
Early Challenges and Prospects
During his introduction, Forlán expressed that taking on this role represents a privilege and a responsibility with his country. Regarding the situation of the striker Luis Suárez, who was not called up in the last convocations, the head coach did not rule out his return to the team: 'I have a huge affection and a lot of confidence in him. If he is eligible, having a player like him, who has goals, experience, and continues to demonstrate it every weekend he plays, why not? We will see in the future,' the coach said.
The start of this transition phase will take place during the FIFA-organized period in September. The Uruguayan team will travel to the Asian continent to play two friendly matches against Japan and South Korea, which will serve as the first evaluation for the new coaching staff.
