After Marcelo Bielsa left the bench of the Uruguayan national team, the South American federation decided to give the opportunity to Diego Forlán as an interim coach. Forlán, who was already the coach of the Sub-20 team, took on the role until March 2027, with the intention of restructuring the national team's project.
Support from 'Loco' Abreu for Forlán
One of Forlán's former teammates and a Uruguayan figure, Sebastián Abreu, expressed his confidence in the ex-forward. 'He is a friend, someone from our generation, in which he gave us many joys. He has this opportunity until March to be interim coach of the senior team and take over as coach of the Sub-20 team, and clearly it will be a challenge for him,' commented Abreu.
Golden Opportunity for Forlán in Uruguay
'Loco' Abreu knows well the situation in Uruguay and the possibility Forlán may have when a decision is made in March. If he performs well during these months, the ex-forward could secure the permanent position. 'He will have in mind that whatever happens in this South American tournament and in the upcoming FIFA dates, it can help when in March there are elections in Uruguay and see who the new federation president will be, to continue or evaluate other situations. But seeing him in that privileged place, and as in life, and I told him in an audio, there is a person who is born with a star and a person who is born with a star. He is born with a star, of having this privilege of being the coach of the Uruguayan national team, regardless of whether it is interim, he will be standing there, with that fantastic group of players, and he will have the opportunity also to take a very nice generation of the Sub-20 team for the South American tournament in January,' added Abreu.
'So, from our side, which is our people, today I saw a photo that generated a lot of emotion, seeing the utility man and the cook together with the Russian Pérez at a meal in the dining room where we usually ate. That photo has a lot of symbolism and I wish him all the best from the heart because he is a friend,' concluded Abreu.
